AZ Dryer Pros · October 15, 2026
At least once a year, which is the interval fire safety groups recommend for any home. Clean it sooner if loads take longer than they used to, the laundry room gets hot, or your vent runs through the roof or is longer than average. In Arizona, the best time for many homes is in the fall, after monsoon dust has had a chance to pack the outside hood.
The once-a-year baseline
The National Fire Protection Association's dryer safety tips say to clean lint out of the vent pipe once a year, or more often if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry. That is a minimum, not a target. It assumes an average household and an average vent.
The lint screen is a separate job. Clean it before or after every load. It catches most of the lint, but not all of it, and what gets past it settles along the inside of the duct and at the outside hood.
When once a year isn't enough
Some homes fill a vent faster than others. If any of these describe your house, plan on checking it more often than once a year:
- A large household running the dryer most days
- Pets that shed, or a lot of towels and bedding
- A vent that exits through the roof or a second-floor wall
- A long run with several elbows
- An outside hood that faces the prevailing wind or sits low to the ground
- A dryer that has shown a check vent or airflow warning
What Arizona adds to the schedule
Monsoon season runs from June 15 to September 30. Dust storms during those months push fine dust into outside vent hoods, where it mixes with damp lint and packs the flap shut. A vent cleaned in spring can be partly blocked by October.
Spring brings a different problem. Birds look for sheltered openings to nest in, and a dryer hood on a stucco wall is a common choice. A nest can block a vent completely in a few days.
In Flagstaff and Prescott, winter adds snow and ice. A flap that freezes shut or gets buried in drifting snow stops the dryer from exhausting at all. Check the outside hood after storms.
Putting that together, a simple calendar works for most Arizona homes. In the low desert, schedule the yearly cleaning in October, once the monsoon is over, and glance at the outside hood in April or May when birds start nesting. Up north, clean in the fall before the first snow, and check the hood after each storm through the winter.
Signs it's time now, whatever the calendar says
Don't wait for the annual date if you notice any of these:
- Towels need a second cycle to dry
- The top of the dryer or the laundry room feels hotter than usual
- A burning or hot-lint smell while the dryer runs
- Lint collecting around the outside hood
- The outside flap doesn't open, or barely moves, while the dryer runs
What a cleaning visit covers
A standard cleaning is $79. We measure the airflow at the outside vent, clear the hose and the area behind the dryer, brush and vacuum the full run to the outside hood, and measure the airflow again. You get before-and-after photos.
If the run is badly packed or very long, the cleaning starts at $129. Roof and second-floor vents start at $199. You see the reason and the exact price before any work beyond the $79 cleaning, and if you say no, you pay only for what you approved.
